Last week the OpenLaszlo team announced official support of the new Flash9 runtime! That means, OpenLaszlo supports Flash8, Ajax/DHTML and Flash9 as runtimes for use in production. The first large OpenLaszlo application utilizing the Flash9 runtime is the g.ho.st (Global Hosted Operating System).
G.ho.st is running on the new OpenLaszlo Flash9 runtime
According to Zvi Schreiber, Founder and CEO of G.ho.st, the g.ho.st application profits from a massive speed improvement of the underlying Flash9 Player:
“With this new version of OpenLaszlo users of our G.ho.st (”ghost”) Virtual Computer service are experiencing a 4 to 5x improvement in performance. Utilizing OpenLaszlo, the G.ho.st Virtual Computer now offers the speed, performance and functionality of a desktop application all within a web page delivering the vision of ‘available everywhere’ and reducing cost and complexity. We believe this is the future of computing and are proud to be a key partner in this exciting release from Laszlo.”
At the core of the OpenLaszlo 4.3 server is a powerful compiler, capable of compiling LZX (XML + JavaScript) into JavaScript 2, and from there converting that code either into JavaScript 1.5 and ActionScript 3 source code or directly into ActionScript 2 bytecode for the Flash8 runtime. For the Flash9 runtime the generated ActionScript 3 code is compiled into AS3 bytecode using the embedded Flex compiler. The following diagram visualizes the compile process in a simplified way:
With added Flash9 support OpenLaszlo is a true multi-runtime RIA platform, and as a benefit of the new improved compiler architecture adding new runtime support for technologies like Microsoft Silverlight is even easier to accomplish.
