LG just launched a mobile application store in their home market South Korea, Singapore and Australia. They haven’t announced a date for a launch of the program for the rest of the world.
LG Electronics launched app store in Asia
You can visit the Australian site of the app store to get an impression of what the store looks like. LG applications can be developed using a J2ME based SDK or a widget toolkit with a pre-defined API. The developer portal can found at http://developer.lgmobile.com. Here are some of the features of the mobile widget SDK:
- Widget preview on the same level of mobile environment
- Camera feature of mobile
- Multimedia play feature
- PIM, message, GPS, call features
- Debugging feature on JavaScript
- Information on DOM, Box tree, and CSS
- Display of LG Device APIs used in widgets
- Event view feature on running widgets
- Interworking feature with external editor to make a widget
It’s interesting to see that FlashLite doesn’t play any role in the SDK. LG was one of the first companies to use Flash Lite for building phone UIs. The LG Prada’s entire touch screen UI had been implemented using Flash Lite 2.1. Here’s some screenshots of the Flash Lite content on the Prada:
LG Prada phone's touch screen UI was fully implemented with Flash Lite
It looks like more and more mobile handset manufacturers and carriers are moving away from the idea of using Flash for their SDKs, and JavaScript/Ajax is used as a basis for a number of new SDKs, including the Palm Pré Mojo SDK
